Exploring Deaf Children's Early Reading and Literacy Development
And
Get Them Writing! (An interactive writing workshop)
Presented by Caroline Murphy, Jeannine Malherbe,
Miriam Smith
Literacy skills begin at birth and continue into the early school years. As reading and writing become more formal in the early primary years this skill poses more of a challenge for deaf children.
This will be a day of training given in two parts revolving around literacy for those working throughout the early years and primary years to discuss and learn about these challenges and ways to support the children we work with.
The morning session (9:15-12:00) will look at early reading skills through an interactive presentation. This course covers the development of phonological awareness and the identification of at-risk children as well as exploring practical strategies and activities.
The afternoon session will look at ways to support and develop writing skills through a variety of mini- workshops. The workshops will look at extending vocabulary and sentences, improving structure and strategies to increase independent, imaginative writing. Please bring your own writing samples to this session to look at together
**When signing up for the course, please indicate if you would like the morning session (9:15-12:00), the afternoon session (12:45-3:15), or both**
Please be aware lunch is not provided
