Welcome to Dolphin Class

Class Teacher: Kai Harper

Hi and welcome to Dolphin class! My name is Kai and I have been working at College Park School for 3 years now. I began working as a Teaching Assistant here before becoming a teacher.

As a teacher, I feel working with our students to help them grow and develop is a very rewarding job. I feel that the children often have a lot to teach us. It is not a one-sided relationship and being able to see the progress they make creates a very happy environment.

This year I am working in secondary, and we are learning to develop our independence and grown-up skills. In Dolphin class the pupils all have a wide variety of sensory needs which we aim to meet by incorporating sensory activities into our curriculum. This allows us to help the pupils stay engaged with the class and feel regulated. We have a number of non-verbal pupils in our class, who communicate through Makaton and AAC devices, such as Pixon boards and Communication books.

We have Attention Autism sessions to help improve their attention span skills. We make sure to maintain a positive and calm learning environment by listening to our pupils and teaching them how to improve their communication skills when requesting. We make use of visuals, we tailor our activities to each pupil’s interest to keep them engaged and motivated. We are patient and make sure to give them time and space to process instructions.

In Dolphin Class we work as a team to provide a consistent approach and support the pupils.
