  • Reduce verbal input
  • Use simple, literal language [no sarcasm or irony]
  • Increase visual support [visual schedules, diagrams, pictures, symbols]
  • Give the child/young person time to process questions and instructions
  • Teach listening skills explicitly
  • Ensure the child/young person works with more able communicators in pairs and groups
  • Teach vocabulary that is helpful for their social or learning skills or key to accessing the topic.
