Strategies

Please find below general tips for Autism in the classroom.

  • Reduce verbal input
  • Use simple, literal language [no sarcasm or irony]
  • Increase visual support [visual schedules, diagrams, pictures, symbols]
  • Give the child/young person time to process questions and instructions
  • Use motivational rewards such as special interests
  • Consider sensory needs and provide regular sensory breaks
  • Provide quiet safe place for child/young person if they are in distress
